From Turmoil to Tenacity
Early Childhood Experiences in the Liberian Civil War
"What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us."
Sometimes the most profound stories remain untold, until the right moment arises to share them as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. For me, that moment is now.

At five years old, my life was upended by the Liberian Civil War. One fateful night, I overheard my parents' hushed conversation about rebels approaching our town. Hours later, we fled into the darkness, thorns piercing my skin as we ran. My stepfather shielded me, my mother cradled my sister, as we sought refuge in a stranger's home. Through the window, I caught a glimpse of gunmen patrolling - a terrifying reality that could have ended much worse.

That harrowing experience was the catalyst for my journey to America, where my biological father awaited. However, the challenges were far from over. I faced incessant bullying due to my accent and appearance. Yet, I refused to be defined by cruelty. Education became my anchor, my path forward paved with perseverance.

From the dust of turmoil, I shaped a life of tenacity. My story is one of confronting adversity head-on, of harnessing inner strength to overcome obstacles. It taught me the value of empathy, the power of perseverance, and the importance of realizing one's potential to create positive change.

I share this not for pity, but to inspire. To anyone facing daunting circumstances, know that you have the capacity to emerge stronger, wiser, and more resilient than before. The road may be arduous, but the rewards of persisting are immeasurable. Stay focused, stay determined, and never lose sight of your dreams.
